1.What is a Distance Learning Class ?

A DL class is a course that is offered for home study with internet support through Vista . It requires you to read and study the assignments per the course calendar and go to an approved center for tests. A DL class appeals to self disciplined students who are not carrying a heavy course load. This course takes serious time and effort. If you are taking this class because you are very busy or cannot fit another class into your schedule, you may want to rethink enrollment in this class.

2. How will I know what to do?

First off, students need to follow the instructions to get into Vista. Go to
http:// ecollege.lonestar.edu and get your user name and password. Proceed to enter the class at this location. If you are registered, have your password but cannot get in, contact me by email at linda.woodward@Lonestar.edu and pass this info on to me. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH CLASS YOU ARE IN on any correspondance.. Also, you can call the Distance Learning help desk at 936.273.7600 for assistance.

Additionally, a calendar will be made for you so that you can keep up with assignments and testing. Test dates, assignment dates and couse policies are clearly spelled out. I do not give makeup tests or incompletes except under the most serious and dire circumstances. This decision is made by the instructor. Additionally, it is critical that any problems relating to your completion of the requirements for this course be communicated on a timely basis. There is only one class required for the entire semester and that is orientation.

3. What if I get lost or don't understand something?

First, do some exploration and digging for yourself. Explore all the icons and links. Secondly, be active on the discussion board. I encourage "buddies". They can answer many questions. If you are completely stumped, email me via Vista . Challenge yourself to check the class often for postings and emails. students ask me  "How often?' I reccommend daily. Students are responsible for asking questions or reading communications for the course. I check emails several times every day in order to asnwer all questions asap!

4. What about testing? I work crazy hours!

The tests are available for several days at any Lone Star Assessment center. Check their hours and plan the time best for you! Test are multiple choice and some questions will involve identifying works of art. A slide list will be provided in your Study Questions assignments. Being unable to take a test due to work or distance from the testing center is not considered a valid excuse. I advise you do not wait until the last minute to take the test. Ample time is given for you to take the tests yet invariabley, students wait until the last day, meet some unforeseen circumstance and miss the test. Plan to take the test with plenty of time to spare. If oyu are outside of our district, you may take the tests at a library or college testing center but you MUST email me the week the semester starts to make arrangements. This is your responsibility and I do not extend tests due to communication delays. Please email me for the procedures.

5. What is the best way to succeed in this course?

My students tell me that this is done by these ways:

  1. Discipline: Each week set a time for your reading and note taking . Do not fall behind in your assignments. It is nearly impossible to get caught up on the work.
  2. Do all assignments. Don't procrastinate!
  3. Communicate: If you don't understand or need an answer just ask.
  4. Take time to prepare for your test. One night before won't work.
  5. Know your limits. Squeezing this in as an "extra course" becasue you are working long hours or carrying several other classes is not the answer for success. Being "too busy" may make you stressed and unsuccessful.
  6. Most students tell me that they were surprized at how much they need to learn for the course. Art Appreciation is not necessarily an easy course. You have to tackle it as any other college level course.
