Astronomy
Who is Dr. Aaron B. Clevenson?
I have been an amateur astronomer since 1962 when I was introduced to astronomy by my sister Shirley.
When I was young she built me a solar observatory out of a refrigerator box so that I could safely
observe a solar eclipse from our driveway.
Other young observations include my first meteor shower watching, the Perseids, on August 12, 1966
which included seeing two earth orbiting satellites. (not sure which two)
I took my first astronomy course in 1975 at Carnegie-Mellon University. It was quite similar to
our 1411 and 1412, but with much more math. This was where I became firmly hooked on astronomy.
In the summer of 1976, I worked at the Harvard University Observatory in Harvard, MA as a
technician. This set the hook even deeper.
Currently, I teach astronomy at Montgomery and Kingwood Colleges. I have taught PHYS 1404
(Planetary) and PHYS 1403 (Stellar).
I am President of the
North Houston Astronomy Club (NHAC)
, and am affilliated with all of the other
local astronomy clubs in the Houston area. For NHAC I am the Astronomical League Coordinator,
the Outreach Coordinator, Chairman of their Dark Site Search Committee, among many other roles.
I am also affiliated with the Astronomical League. I am the coordinator for their Planetary
Observing Certification and also their two Constellation Hunter certifications (which I developed).
I am one of their National Observation Program Coordinators.
